Sony Responds To Fortnite Backlash Regarding Cross-Play Restrictions On PS4

Fortnite For Nintendo Switch Released Sony's Cross-Play Policies Are Hurting Fortnite Players on Nintendo Switch

Sony Interactive Entertainment issued a statement to the BBC today that doesn't deal directly with the core issue that players are taking issue with. In addition to confirming that Fortnite for the Switch has already been downloaded over 2 million time, Fils-Aime added, "We embrace working with a developer and enabling them to bring their vision to life and whether that's Fortnite, whether that's a number of the other games that have cross-platform play on our console, from a developer standpoint that's what we want".

During the Nintendo Treehouse live stream, the presenters of Super Mario Party announced that the game will include an online multiplayer mode that can be played with friends or the world wide community.

Epic said this week that the title has amassed 125 million players worldwide. The slightly disappointing news is that it doesn't appear that Fortnite for Switch will contain any Nintendo-specific content.

Things are heating up at Sony after the company was forced to respond to fan anger at the lack of Fortnite cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, as revealed at this year's E3 gaming expo. "Neither the "Fortnite" website nor Epic Customer Service are able to change this". Then again, if it was simply a matter of tweaking some back-end stuff, you'd think the typically quite responsive Fortnite team would've either resolved the issue or at least explained it by now.

A full slate of World Cup action gets underway on Friday, with Spain taking on Portugal as +105 chalk in a crucial Group B clash. During the next month, the men's national teams will compete in 12 venues in 11 cities around Russian Federation .

Many fans are understandably upset. This has caused problems this week for Fortnite fans because while most people don't bounce between PS4 and Xbox One, the hybrid home/handheld Switch system enables fundamentally different opportunities for play. Any progression they've made in the game, like completing challenges, won't transfer as well.

So, Sony's response to the outrage is essentially "there are enough people playing on PS4 already and even if there weren't, you can still play with people on PC and mobile devices". Both Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony's competitors in the market, haven't created the same blockade and allow for cross-play between the consoles. Last year, when Microsoft chose to unite all versions of "Minecraft" in what it called the Better Together Update, Sony blocked it on the PS4 and said it was to protect younger gamers. And as time goes on, the gamers are only getting louder. "For us, its one of many mechanics we can use to drive on-going engagement in the game".

There are signs the backlash could be affecting Sony financially.
