Paul raccoon safely trapped on tower roof

Raccoon Scaling St. Paul Skyscraper Sets Off Social Media Firestorm 'MPR raccoon' scales UBS Tower in St. Paul

People were so invested in the journey of MPR Raccoon that many posted that they would not be able to go on if the animal were to drop to her untimely death.

After falling for the trap placed on the roof of the building she scaled, the bedraggled racoon took the easy way down the building via the freight lift, a Minnesota Public Radio News reporter quipped in a tweet. It escaped to the roof of the two-story building, then climbed another 20 stories up the side of the nearby UBS tower, as people gathered on the street below taking photos, video and creating a buzz online.

The animal made it to the roof early on Wednesday, where traps baited with cat food were waiting.

And now that our masked adventurer is safely confined and will soon be released to its preferred habitat, for today's 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear for the #MPRraccoon?

The raccoon's adventures caused a stir on social media, with many on Twitter concerned about the safety of the animal or joking about the drama surrounding the daring crawl to the top.

Valdivia said the roughly 1-year-old female raccoon did not appear hungry or thirsty - it had glutted on pigeon eggs at some point Monday, when it kicked the whole saga off by getting stuck on a ledge.

"To think that one of these little animals would top the trending on twitter is a complete surprise to me", MPR's Tim Nelson told the BBC.

Building managers tweeted a picture of the raccoon in a cage Wednesday morning.

The creature's climb attracted the attention of the internet and was soon dubbed the #MPRRaccoon, a reference to the Minnesota Public Radio station, which is located in the building across from the one the raccoon tried to climb.

The building's windows don't open, so assistance won't be easy.

This glowing response to the presence of a raccoon is unusual in the USA, where the animals are usually considered pests.
