Your internet use could change as 'net neutrality' ends

Net neutrality ends this Monday June 11th motion to keep it alive could die in the House It's 4th and 40 for net neutrality supporters in Congress as House is short of the votes needed to bring up the CRA motion

Republican FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has accused Democrats of "scare tactics" in their opposition to net neutrality repeal.

"Now, on June 11, these unnecessary and harmful internet regulations will be repealed and the bipartisan, light-touch approach that served the online world well for almost 20 years will be restored", Pai said in a statement last month. Almost two dozen states and several companies have sued the government to try and preserve the rules.

While it seems inevitable that net neutrality will end tomorrow, not much will likely happen at first. The Senate last month passed a Congressional Review Act measure 52-47 aiming to overturn the 2017 measure (the CRA is a quick way to overturn newly-passed regulations within 60 legislative days of passage). Others, including the governors of Montana and NY, used executive orders to force net neutrality.

There is also 5G internet being rolled out later this year that will bring new wireless home internet options. "Every Republican who opposed this vote will own any and all of the damaging consequences of the FCC's horribly misguided decision". Led by current Chairman Ajit Pai, the FCC voted 3-2 in December to repeal the Obama-era open internet rules.

Kim Jong-un's attempt at public relations makeover ahead of summit
Trump, 71, landed at Paya Lebar Airbase on board Air Force One after cutting short his time at the G7 summit in Canada. Concrete barricades have been erected outside St Regis Singapore hotel which is within the zoned security area.

So net neutrality's path through Congress is an uphill battle, but some are still optimistic that net neutrality will win out in the end.

A statement by the pro net-neutrality group Fight for the Future declared: "June 11th will serve as the kick-off for intense campaigning focused on House lawmakers, who will be under tremendous pressure to support the [net neturality measure] ahead of the midterm elections, given that voters from across the political spectrum overwhelmingly support restoring these rules". The Senate already passed a historic bipartisan resolution disapproving the repeal. "The Internet is coming for net neutrality". "There is nowhere to hide", Greer concluded. Almost 50 more House lawmakers must sign a discharge petition introduced by Congressman Mike Doyle in order to force a vote.

And while a new administration in 2020 could, in theory, return the rules back to what they were, a more permanent decision still lies with Congress. According to the National Council of State Legislatures, governors in six states - New Jersey, New York, Montana, Rhode Island, Vermont and Hawaii - have signed executive orders upholding net neutrality, and three - Washington, Vermont and OR - have enacted legislation that does so. If you're interested in letting your representatives know where you stand on net neutrality and how you'd like them to vote, you can see a tally of who has and hasn't agreed to support net neutrality here.
