Trump on June 9 tweeted that based on "false statements" by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who hosted a G7 summit in Quebec, he had instructed USA representatives not to endorse the final communique, which the Canadian leader had said was agreed to by all G7 nations.
McCain took to Twitter to express his displeasure.
He was reacting to Trudeau's declaration that Canadians would "not be pushed around" and would hit back at punishing U.S. tariffs on metal imports with "equivalent tariffs". The United States pays enormous tariffs on dairy.
Trump was quick to respond to Trudeau's announcement in a Twitter outburst Saturday evening, writing that he will instruct USA representatives at the G7 summit to not sign the joint communique the seven nations crafted after a series of compromises and threatening to impose tariffs on automobiles from Canada.
In his final news conference before leaving, Mr Trump said trade was at the top of the agenda and the United States has been taken advantage of for decades and it cannot go on.
Asked whether Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's team was engaged in frantic damage control, a Canadian government official said it was always clear there would be disagreements at the summit over trade and relations with Russian Federation.
Because of the disputes, many observers were not certain a statement would be issued under all seven countries' names.
He left before any resolution was announced on the traditional joint statement from the seven industrialized nations in the group, which in addition to the US and Canada includes Britain, Italy, France, Germany and Japan.
Calling his Asian trip a "mission of peace", Trump told reporters, "I think it's gonna to work very well".
"The United States will not allow other countries to impose massive Tariffs and Trade Barriers on its farmers, workers and companies".
During the summit, Trump was accused of seeking to undermine the "rules-based" global order but the final statement began by stressing "the crucial role of a rules-based worldwide trading system" as well as a commitment to "continue to fight protectionism". "We're like the piggy bank that everybody is robbing".
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed afterwards to press ahead with retaliatory tariffs on 1 July.
Trump said: "If they retaliate they are making a mistake". "We're not looking to play games", he said. He wants to browbeat other countries for concessions, although he often fails to articulate which concessions he wants.
The US president left on Saturday for Singapore and a historic summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, claiming he had made progress convincing the other G7 leaders that trade between their countries must be better balanced or halt altogether.
May characterized her relationship with Trump as "very good".
Still, the United States and European Union will establish a dialogue on trade within the next two weeks, signalling a modest step forward for the bitterly divided allies of the G7. Macron told reporters that while Trump may not mind USA isolation, "neither do we mind signing a six country agreement if need be".
"For us, it was important that we have a commitment for a rule-based trade order, that we continue to fight against protectionism and that we want to reform the WTO", Merkel told reporters.
