Speaking shortly before beginning his long journey to Singapore, Trump told reporters that contacts between the United States and North Korean negotiators had been positive in the build-up to Tuesday's historic meeting and talked up its prospects of success.
President Trump speaks with Kim Yong Chol, former North Korean military intelligence chief and one of leader Kim Jong Un's closest aides, after their meeting in the Oval Office of the White House on June 1.
In their letter, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Robert Menendez, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called for any agreement with North Korea to meet five key points: that all weapons of mass destruction be removed or dismantled; that there be no uranium enrichment or plutonium reprocessing; that it end all ballistic missile testing; that it allow "anytime, anywhere" inspections of its facilities; and that a deal be permanent.
They'll arrive to "summit fever" across the island territory - with locals selling everything from drinks and tacos to gold medallions to mark Trump's historic huddle with the hermit king.
North Korea seeks a deterrent against more powerful adversaries to guarantee its regime survival and to establish mutual nuclear vulnerability with the United States - unless the United States abandons its "hostile policy" toward North Korea and engages in mutual nuclear arms reductions - as well as to improve its strategic position and standing as a normal and "responsible nuclear state".
"I think a good outcome would be positive for the markets because it would create more stability in the region", Hormats said in an interview on "Countdown to the Closing Bell". But nothing will be fully settled until China, which sent hundreds of thousands of troops into the North to prevent a quick USA victory in 1950, and South Korea also sign off.
"So we're going in with a very positive spirit", Trump said, before misidentifying the site of the meeting.

When Trump was asked by a reporter Saturday if he is concerned that he is giving Kim a "win" on the world stage just by having the meeting, the president said he's not concerned because "we haven't done anything" yet. The president appeared exhausted and subdued, and he demeaned the press corps, calling some US news outlets "unbelievably dishonest" and "fake news" before aides pulled him away to start his journey to Southeast Asia.
The group says it has trained about 2,000 North Koreans and brought about 100 to Singapore, with its most recent workshop in North Korea in May, and two more scheduled in August and November.
Then, Trump followed up with another Trudeau-targeted tweet, calling him "meek and mild" during the summit in Montreal and also "very dishonest and weak". We appreciate the working together with North Korea.
He went on to say that the objective of the summit would "be more meaningful with Russian Federation".
Singapore has insisted that it did not go looking to host the event - Balakrishnan said his government was approached first by Washington, and later Pyongyang. And he memorably took the South Korean president by the hand, when they met at the border of their two countries, physically leading him back over into North. There's probably an even better chance that it will take a period of time.
