Google Won't Use AI For Weapons Or For Surveillance 'Violating Norms'

Google CEO bans autonomous weapons in new AI guidelines Google’s new ethics rules forbid using its AI for weapons

Now Google - which itself owns the aforementioned DeepMind - has provided some clarity with its own rules for AI research.

Recently, NITI Aayog's discussion paper on artifical intelligence has also taken cognisance of the fact that AI can create biases, it may impinge on one's privacy and undermine security protocol.

They should be "built and tested for safety", be built with privacy in mind, and "uphold high standards of scientific excellence".

To be more specific, Pichai claims that Google will not be using its AI technology for use in weapons or surveillance. The company won't, for example, work on surveillance that falls outside "internationally accepted norms" or anything unsafe unless "the benefits substantially outweigh the risks".

Though Pichai's principles don't address Project Maven directly, it does commit to not using AI to create weapons or "other technologies whose principal purpose" is to injure people. Similarly, the internationally accepted norms aren't specified, with the worldwide community entering a time in which the U.S.is rewriting many norms.

Google, reeling from an employee protest over the use of artificial intelligence for military purposes, said Thursday it would not use AI for weapons or for surveillance that violates human rights. Google will not allow its AI to be used against principles of global law and human rights.

Google Makes a Vague Pledge to Limit Work on Artificial Intelligence in Weapons, Surveillance

"We will design AI systems that provide appropriate opportunities for feedback, relevant explanations, and appeal". It's up to consumers (and Google employees) to make sure the company adheres to these promises. It did say that it will continue its governmental and military work in other areas, however.

Faced with a petition signed by thousands of employees and criticism outside the company, Google indicated the $10 million contract would not be renewed, according to media reports.

I see two very big problems with this.

Google has betits future on artificial intelligence, and company executives believe the technology could have an impact comparable to the development of the internet. And while many experts have called for some type of AI ethics regulation, most companies have been figuring it out as they go along.

The Toronto Declaration, put together by human rights and technology groups in May, is a good starting framework for making sure algorithms respect human rights, which regulations could be based on.

"While this means that we will not pursue certain types of government contracts", Greene wrote, "we want to assure our customers and partners that we are still doing everything we can within these guidelines to support our government, the military and our veterans".
