What to do if you suspect someone is suicidal

Suicide rates rising 'significantly' across America CDC reveals in new report Designer Kate Spade 55 was found dead insisde her Manhattan apartment early Tuesday

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death and is one of just three leading causes that are increasing, along with unintentional injuries and Alzheimer's disease. Suicide rates spiked significantly in 44 states between 1999 and 2016, with significant increases in Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire. In the US, to nobody's surprise, firearms are the most commonly used method, accounting for 41 percent of suicides of people with known mental-health conditions, and 55 percent of those without, according to the CDC report.

"And, unfortunately, our data show that the problem is getting worse", Anne Schuchat, MD, principal deputy director at CDC, said at a press briefing, reports Medscape.

Adults ages 45 to 64 had the largest increase in the suicide rate, from 13.2 suicides per 100,000 people in 1999 to 19.2 suicides per 100,000 in 2016.

Researchers found that more than half - 54 percent - of people who died by suicide did not have a known mental health condition. Its list ranges from relationship problems, poor health and acute crisis to legal issues, job loss and money trouble, among others.

"Frankly, we need to start championing mental health, just like we championed cancer and AIDS years ago", Alice Jordan-Miles from the Indiana Suicide Prevention Coalition explained.

"Suicide does tend to rise during the holidays or at least that's what some early reports said". And it's unfortunate that there's so much stigma attached both to mental health diagnoses and treatment and to suicide, still considered a very shameful thing in many places. "But I think the truth is, you really make it less likely, because they know there's somebody who cares about them, and you can help them get help".

While she says she's troubled by the recent high profile suicides, she is thrilled that people are now talking about the problem. These high-profile deaths come the same week the CDC reported suicide rates in the USA have risen almost 30 percent since 1999.

However, data shows more Nevadans under the age of 18 committed suicide this year already, compared to all of last year.

Among the stark numbers in the CDC report was the one signaling a high number of suicides among people without a known mental health condition. But most did have life problems. Middle America and the Rocky Mountain West, for example, saw some of the biggest increases in suicide rates, suggesting specific cultural and social factors like gun ownership and opioid addiction may be contributing to their high suicide rates. They are part of a task force that work with patients, in the upstate, struggling with mental health problems.

"Most people that either attempt or complete suicide, they aren't so much wanting to die as they want to be out of the pain they are in", Summers said.

"That includes a professional to help them with their thoughts of suicide", Egan said. "You never get used to it", Williams said.

Suicide ranked as the ninth-leading cause of death in Canada in 2009, the a year ago for which numbers are available, and is the 10th-leading cause of death overall in the U.S. "They might actually bring up specifically that they're thinking of suicide".
