The electric aircraft had 10 small lift rotors on its wings, making it capable of vertical take-off and landing like a helicopter.

The Flyer is one of two major initiatives at Kitty Hawk.

Kitty Hawk's Cora air taxi is being tested in Canterbury.

Google co-founder Larry Page is showcasing his flying auto company's latest model, the Flyer.

With a similar flying auto project, cab aggregator Uber has entered into an agreement with NASA to explore concepts and technologies related to urban air mobility (UAM) for future air transportation in populated areas.

The company was created previous year in Google´s home town of Mountain View, California, and has been testing a prototype in New Zealand.

Piloting Kitty Hawk is as easy as playing the video game Minecraft, chief executive Sebastian Thrun said in published reports.

MI part of multistate outbreak of Salmonella
The CDC said Walmart and Kroger stores in the affected states had removed pre-cut melon linked to the outbreak from their shelves. To date, 60 people infected with the outbreak strain have been reported in five states, including 32 cases in MI .

"Making Flyer accessible, which is what we do at our Lake Las Vegas training facility, helps more people experience the freedom and possibilities of vehicles of the future", a Kitty Hawk spokesman told AFP.

The start-up teased the Flyer in a demo video previous year, and is now nearing public roll out. Landing skids enable takeoff from land but are presumably designed for floatation, as the Flyer is meant to be used above water.

At a distance of 50ft the Flyer will sound like a lawnmower and a loud conversation at 250ft.

"Riders" will initially be limited to an altitude of just 3-10 feet above the water at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour, with an expected flight duration of 12-20 minutes.

"Flyer" will operate under FAA CFR Part 103 - Ultralight, and may only be flown over uncongested areas. The company has not disclosed an actual maximum speed or ceiling, nor a process for qualifying pilots to fly the aircraft above solid ground at potentially unsafe heights. The Flyer is essentially a drone big enough to carry a person, and according to its designers the controls can be mastered in as little as an hour. On its website, Kitty Hawk says the plan is to offer the aircraft as "part of a service similar to an airline or a rideshare".

The new flying machine is one of several concept vehicles being testing, with Uber and others in the mix.
