President Trump considering pardon of boxing great Muhammad Ali

Sammy Stanley | 08 June, 2018, 17:39

US President Donald Trump said on Friday he is considering pardoning some 3,000 people, including the late boxing champion Muhammad Ali, whose conviction for refusing to join the US military during the Vietnam War was later vacated by the US Supreme Court.

In 1967, Ali, arguably at the height of his athletic powers, refused to be inducted into the U.S. Army, citing religious reasons after his conversion to Islam.

Ali was stripped of his heavyweight crown in 1967. He avoided prison while his case was appealed. "I'm thinking about that very seriously".

Ali's attorney, Ron Tweel, responded to the President's gesture in a statement Friday. "There is no conviction from which a pardon is needed". The Supreme Court would overturn his conviction in 1971.

Trump has reportedly become increasingly "obsessed" with pardons and enjoys talking about potential pardons with aides, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Earlier this week, he also commuted the life sentence of a woman whose cause was championed by Kim Kardashian West.

It has been widely reported that the White House has assembled the paperwork to pardon dozens of people.

The president has recently mooted pardons for lifestyle personality Martha Stewart and former governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich.

Trump's already granted a posthumous pardon to boxing's first black heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson - convicted of violating a law that made it illegal to transport women across state lines for "immoral" purposes. He said he wants the athletes to tell him who they think has been treated unfairly by the justice system and he would consider pardoning them.
