"Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States and worldwide", note the study authors.

Dr Epstein, a clinical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in NY, said the two studies show "the anti-inflammatory benefits of a relatively cheap, well-tolerated supplement". "You're never going to see these kinds of trials from the drug companies", because what is being tested might result in less use of their products, Brawley said.

At MedShadow, she reports on new findings and research on the side effects of prescription drugs.

The study was supported in part by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Komen Foundation, and the Breast Cancer Research Stamp.

Two separate studies, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Chicago, show Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce discomfort caused by certain therapies.

The study found that all women over 50 with this type of breast cancer could skip chemotherapy, a group that represented 85% of the study's population. The trial used a molecular test (Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score) that assesses the expression of 21 genes associated with breast cancer recurrence to assign women with early-stage, HR-positive, HER2-negative, axillary lymph node-negative breast cancer to the most appropriate and effective post-operative treatment. "We originally, years ago, just did surgery, and then for many many years, everybody got chemotherapy, and now we know that we have these anti-hormonal drugs and pills that women can take". At nine years, the rate was 83.3 percent for those with hormone therapy alone and 84.3 percent for the group that had both therapies.

Studies have shown that women in the low risk category can effectively be treated without receiving chemotherapy, while those with a high risk of recurrence do need chemo.

Carolina's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, said she'd be quite comfortable counseling patients to bypass chemo if they had been like those from the study who didn't gain from it. "Any woman with early-stage breast cancer age 75 or younger should have the 21-gene expression test and discuss the results with her doctor to guide her decision to the right therapy". "And this is the promise of personalized medicine, and it's arrived", Agus said.
