For context, about 12.4% of women in the US-or about 20 million-will likely develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

The new study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that these women should not receive chemotherapy.

The TAILORx trial used the Oncotype DX test, which is available on the NHS and which allows doctors to predict the likelihood of the breast cancer returning.

But nearly two years later, all of Perkins' cancer cells have disappeared and doctors say she is in remission. Many women think "if I don't get chemotherapy I'm going to die, and if I get chemo I'm going to be cured", but the results show there's a sliding scale of benefit and sometimes none, he said.

"The new results show that most women over 50, and who score within a given range, will not get any benefit from chemotherapy over and above hormonal therapy", Dr. Dana Abraham said, with Abraham Breast Clinic in Little Rock. "It's a technique done in a laboratory", she said. But many women also are urged to have chemo to help kill any stray cancer cells. African-American women are also more likely than white women to develop hormone-negative breast cancer, a disease type that is unresponsive to hormone therapy drugs and thus more hard to treat.

Patients with these kind of tumors typically undergo surgery followed by treatment with drugs that target rapidly dividing cells (chemotherapy) and drugs that block the production or action of the hormone estrogen (endocrine therapy, such as the drug Tamoxifen).

What will she tell women who under prior guidelines received chemo and all its side effects and didn't need it after all?

The challenge so far in cancer immunotherapy is it tends to work spectacularly for some patients, but the majority do not benefit.

The study is thought to be the largest breast cancer treatment trial ever conducted. It's called the Oncotype DX test. About 84 percent also had no signs of cancer, so chemo treatment had no impact.

A trial of more than 10,000 women - including 690 Irish women - with the most common form of early breast cancer found the treatment was unnecessary for many after surgery.

In some cases, the results will go on to change how patients are treated. Sparano concluded that in women with HR-positive, HER2-negative, AN-negative breast cancer who had a RS of 11 to 25, adjuvant ET was not inferior to CET in the ITT analysis.

Carey pointed to some "grey areas" at the boundaries of the recurrance scores that need futher investigation, and said patients would need to discuss these details with their doctors before any decisions on treatement are made. The tumour is assigned a "recurrence score" from 0 to 100 - higher the score, greater the chance the cancer will recur, with chemotherapy reducing the risk of recurrence.

"To have your health professional tell you don't need chemo, there's one side glad you don't have to have it and the other wondering are we really taking care of my breast cancer", said Garner.

These are the results from a single patient and much larger trials will be needed to confirm the findings.

Not all breast tumors behave the same way, with a number of different subtypes of breast cancer defined by genetic and protein markers.

About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. One of them, a 59-year-old woman came to her office recently with a recurrence score of 17, and was seriously considering chemotherapy.
