Nipah toll in Kerala now 16, Health Minister warns of new outbreak

Besides 1,353 persons who had interacted with the affected before the confirmation of the disease are under observation Nipah virus death toll rises to 15, two new cases found in Kerala

The Kerala state has witnessed 17 deaths in the last two weeks of whom three people have died in the last two days. He was undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. The Kerala government itself has issued an advisory asking travelers to avoid visiting Kozhikode, Malappuram, Waynad and Kannur districts.

State Health Minister KK Shailaja complimented the medical teams of the Centre, state and the private sectors for effectively containing the outbreak.

Kozhikode: As the Nipah virus scare mounts tension in Kerala, the state government has chose to delay the re-opening of schools and colleges in Kozhikode till June 12, which has deferred the examinations barring the Union Publis Service Commission (UPSC).

Wankedekar, who is in the capital city for the IMA conference, said that the virus outbreak does not hold any threat.

Dr R L Saritha, the State health director, said the state is yet to get any information about the demised of an army man suspected to have died of Nipah infection in Kolkata.

Two persons who had earlier tested positive for Nipah in Kozhikode were on Friday tested negative, bringing some relief to the authorities concerned.
