4 more deaths linked to romaine lettuce, 2 in Minnesota

In an update Friday health officials said 25 more cases raised the total to 197 illnesses in 35 states. At least 89 were hospitalized Four more die in E.Coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is investigating the outbreak alongside the CDC, believes that the probable link to all these illnesses is romaine lettuce sourced from the winter growing areas in and around the Yuma region in Arizona.

When a person becomes infected with the bacteria, it can take two to three weeks before a report to the CDC.

Overall, five deaths have been reported in Arkansas, California, Minnesota and NY.

In the update Friday on the nation's largest E. coli outbreak in a decade, health officials said 25 new cases have been added, and at least 89 people were hospitalized.

Officials said that first illness began sometime between March 13 and May 12. The growing season there ended six weeks ago, and it's unlikely any tainted lettuce is still in stores or people's homes, given its short shelf life.

Numerous new cases were people who became ill two to three weeks ago, when contaminated lettuce was still being sold.

"Some people who became sick did not report eating romaine lettuce, but had close contact with someone else who got sick from eating romaine lettuce".

Meanwhile, government authorities are still trying to figure out how and why the outbreak happened.

According to the latest statement from the CDC, numerous people affected fell ill two to three weeks ago, when the contaminated lettuce was still on shop shelves.

Eating the contaminated lettuce may cause diarrhea, vomiting and even kidney failure in severe cases.

Unlike spinach, which is often cooked, romaine - and lettuce in general - is more common as a culprit in E.coli outbreaks because it's eaten raw.

While most people recover within a week, some illnesses can last longer and be more severe, the CDC cautioned.
