EU proposes to ban plastic straws, stirs, and cotton buds

EU proposes bloc-wide ban on single-use plastics EU proposes ban on straws, other single-use plastics

Some of these items - like plastic straws, cotton buds, plates and disposable cutlery - will be banned completely under the new rules, which require the approval of the European Parliament and all 28 EU member states.

EU Vice President Frans Timmermans said that utensils would not be banned completely, but steps would be taken to have them made out of sustainable materials when possible.

The EU Commission said the scheme will initially target the 10 single-use plastic products most often found on Europe's beaches and seas, as well as lost and abandoned fishing gear which are a severe threat to marine life.

"Plastic can be fantastic, but we need to use it more responsibly", Commission vice-president Jyrki Katainen said in a statement.

"The only way to stop plastics pouring into our oceans is to turn off the flow at its source: production", said Lasse Gustavsson, the European executive director of the environmental group Oceana, as he lauded the initiative.

It said it will encourage European Union companies to develop economies of scale and become more competitive in the "booming" global market for sustainable products. Toger with aforementioned, he proposes banning cotton swabs - except for those that are used for medical reasons - sticks to remove drinks and sticks to hold balloons.

Storm Alberto: State of EMERGENCY issued as huge storms smash into US
At its height, Alberto , the first storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season , blasted sustained winds of 105km/h. Rough conditions were still whipping up big waves off the eastern and northern Gulf Coast by nightfall Monday.

Stakeholders from the plastics manufacturing trade and the fishing gear trade typically favored the European Fee's proposal and indicated that additional motion was needed, and even pressing.

The Commission is mostly aiming to change the behaviour of consumers, rather than slap extra charges on plastic products that will continue to be available on the market.

Member states would be obligated to reduce the consumption of food containers and drinks cups.

The new measures also include obligations for producers to help cover the costs of clean-up and waste management for items such as cigarette butts, wet wipes and lightweight plastic bags.

Makers of balloons will be further compelled to introduce "new labelling on the environmental impact of the product and recycling options for consumers".

They will also encourage the reduction of plastic food containers and drink cups by setting national reduction targets, offering sustainable alternatives, or simply not offering them for free at the point of sale. Today's proposals will reduce single use plastics on our supermarket shelves through a range of measures.
