Mycoplasma Bovis Forced New Zealand Government Decide The Slaughter Of 150,000 Cows

The disease has now been traced to the Southland farm of Alfons Zeestraten at least back to December 2015. MPI says New Zealand to cull more than 100,000 cows to eradicate Mycoplasma disease

In an attempt to eradicate a disease-causing bacteria from cows, politicians and industry heads in New Zealand agreed on Monday to kill some 150,000 of the creatures. They are not considered a threat to food safety, but do cause production losses.

The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, described as "difficult" the decision to implement this plan, which aims to curb a disease that affects farm animals but which could also be extended to wild animals.

"If we don't take this one chance, the disease will spread and the risk of it eventually affecting many of our herds is high", Poel wrote in a statement for DairyNZ.

The phased eradication, to take place over two years at a cost of NZ$886 million (US$824.93 million), represents only a fraction of New Zealand stock, with some 4.2 million cattle slaughtered annually. The country is the world's largest exporter of milk and dairy products.

It has been made clear by the officials that all the cows belonging to an infected farm will be killed even if they are healthy.

Katie Milne, the national president of the advocacy group Federated Farmers, insisted that authorities would try to make sure affected farmers had all the support they needed, including adequate compensation.

Kyrie Irving missed Game 7 due to deviated septum surgery
Green is expected to exercise his 2018 player option to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. "I've been around a lot of places, but Boston has definitely been my favorite".

"This is a tough call - no one ever wants to see mass culls", she said.

The eradication of Mycoplasma bovis will not be an easy one, but is possible because it's not widespread and there's only one strain of the disease out there.

"And we have to support them as neighbours, community members, farmers, friends". The dairy herd of the country reportedly has around 6.6 million cows.

The problem with Mycoplasma bovis is that it's hard to detect and doesn't respond to antibiotics.

Although many cows are expected to be killed at processing plants and be used for beef, some may have to be killed and buried on farms or in specified landfills, AP reported. It will only be clear by the end of year if the culling of the cows is working.
