Alberto is sitting east of the Yucatan Peninsula with sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and is expected to move north into the Gulf of Mexico, where conditions are favorable for further development.

Forecasters expect Suptropical Storm Alberto to move into the Gulf and toward the Gulf Coast this weekend.

Now spinning off of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, forecasters named the subtropical storm "Alberto", which is the first of 21 names the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has on its list of possible storm names for the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season.

A visible satellite image of the cluster of thunderstorms forecasters are watching for signs of tropical storm development.

The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking Team has issued a SEVERE WEATHER FIRST ALERT for Saturday because of a severe weather threat from Alberto.

Hurricane season officially starts on June 1.

At the meeting, Gov. Scott urged Floridians to watch the weather closely and make a plan.

Invest 90L is an area of disturbed weather near Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula Wednesday night, but there's a high chance (70%) that it becomes either a tropical or subtropical depression over the Gulf of Mexico within the next five days.

NHC predicts a subtropical or tropical depression will form this Memorial Day weekend over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.

The outlooks issued so far have that regular-unleaded look, but the numbers are never as important as the behaviors of individual storms. Heavy rain will likely begin to affect the central Gulf Coast region and the southeastern Untied States later this weekend and continue into early next week. This low is expected to move northward affecting only the central and eastern Gulf coast.

Northwest Florida emergency management officials say some areas could see up to a foot of rain from late Saturday into Tuesday, and widespread flooding is to be expected.

If that were to happen it would put Alabama on the east side and more likely to get heavy rain.
