Ukraine paid Trump lawyer Cohen to arrange White House talks

Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen arrives at his hotel in New York Ukraine Denies Paying Trump Lawyer for White House Meeting

Michael Cohen, US President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, was secretly paid anywhere from $400,000 to $600,000 to arrange a sit-down meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, according to a report released by the BBC on Wednesday.

Freidman was described as Cohen's "significant business partner" in a New York Times article Tuesday that broke the news that Freidman was cooperating with state and federal investigators in order to avoid the prospect of decades in jail for various tax fraud charges.

In June, prosecutors for now-former state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman charged Freidman - a native of Russian Federation who allegedly boasted repeatedly of assets exceeding $130 million - with failing to pay the state $5 million between 2012 and 2015.

Meanwhile, one of Cohen's longtime business ventures was buying licenses, or medallions, to operate taxi cabs in New York City and elsewhere. There is no specific mention of cooperation in a transcript of the plea hearing obtained by ABC News, but prosecutor Ben Clark mentioned "other factors known to the AG" in outlining the terms of the agreement.

On Tuesday, Freidman agreed to pay restitution and judgments totaling $5 million to NY state.

In return, Freidman got five years of probation for pleading guilty Tuesday to a single count of evading $50,000 worth of taxes.

The case was referred to Manhattan federal prosecutors by Robert Mueller, the special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election and contacts between Trump campaign officials and Russians.

The report comes amid growing pressure on Cohen, who worked for years as Trump's personal lawyer and "fixer", helping to smooth business deals and make new ones for Trump's business empire.

The FBI raided Mr Cohen's home, office and hotel room in NY on April 9.

Jonathan Turley, a professor at George Washington University Law School, described it as a "very good deal" for Friedman that could prove a major headache for both Cohen and Trump.

Around the same time, ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft began to dominate the NY livery scene and yellow-cab medallions rapidly lost value. And that's why I've said repeatedly that I think ultimately he's going to flip on the president of the United States.
