US PRESIDENT Donald Trump says Washington would insist that North Korea give up its nuclear weapons despite Pyongyang's threat to pull out of a planned summit. "We haven't seen anything, we haven't heard anything, we will see what happens".

Chinese President Xi Jinping has met twice with Kim over the past two months in what was seen as an attempt to ensure China's interests are upheld in any negotiations between the USA and North Korea.

Ms Sanders said if there was no meeting, the USA would "continue with the campaign of maximum pressure".

Kim Kye Gwan wrote that the United States' offer of extending "economic compensation and benefit" to North Korea in exchange for getting rid of its nuclear weapons is insufficient, and criticized National Security Adviser's John Bolton's comments about Libya serving as a model for North Korean denuclearization. "He'll be there and he'll be ready".

On the surface, South Korea and the United States seem to see the latest developments as a minor setback, but we'll have to wait and see if the highly anticipated summit between Kim Jong-un and President Trump goes ahead as planned.

President Trump has said he expects the June 12th summit in Singapore to be a success.

However, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said during a Tuesday briefing that they had not received any "formal or even informal notification of anything", and are continuing to plan the summit. He said the USA would not soften its demands.

President Trump wrote on his Twitter page: "I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting".

"If the USA is trying to drive us into a corner to force our unilateral nuclear abandonment, we will no longer be interested in such dialogue and can not but reconsider our proceeding to the. summit", he said.

North Korean state media cited current military exercises between Seoul and the U.S. as the reason.

He criticized American officials for citing Libya's denuclearization example as a precedent for North Korea to follow, given how advanced Pyongyang's nukes are.

On Tuesday, a DPRK state media article published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced the cancellation of a planned inter-Korean meeting on the same day over the Max Thunder joint U.S. -ROK military exercises now being staged in South Korea.
