It's not over: What just happened with net neutrality?

US Senate overturns Pai's FCC net neutrality weed-whacker Pie in the face for Pai

They will face a tough fight in the House because many Republican reps support FCC's regulation.

But most Republicans opposed the effort, saying the regulations were potentially too onerous and that Democrats were trying to use the issue for partisan gains in November. Senator John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, said the internet thrived long before the Obama administration stepped in with rules in 2015, and he predicted that when the FCC repeal is in place, consumers won't notice a change in their service.

The 2015 rules were meant to ensure a free and open internet, give consumers equal access to Web content and bar broadband service providers from favoring their own material or others'.

The bipartisan resolution, which Senator Hassan helped introduce, overturns the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) partisan decision to repeal net neutrality protections.

In the short space of time since the ruling, many people in the U.S. have been doing their best to reverse the decision.

A HUGE TRIUMPH for all those in favour of a free internet came last night as the US Senate voted to overturn Ajit Pai's net neutrality "weed whacker" plans, which were due to kick in on 11 June.

"As the measure moves to the House of Representatives, I encourage every Granite Stater and American to continue speaking out about how repealing net neutrality protections would impact them". In a statement sent around Wednesday evening, the DSCC wrote that, "Today Democrats had to demand a vote to protect free and open internet, another reminder of how far Republicans will go to make life more expensive for Americans".

The net neutrality rules, approved by the same organization two years earlier, prohibited internet service providers - such as Comcast and Verizon - from speeding up or slowing down traffic from specific websites and apps.

The 52-47 vote, which saw three Republicans vote against their own side, used the Congressional Review Act - one of the checks and balances specifically created to fix problems caused by government agencies headed up by people who think they cool, but they not.

"This is our chance, our best chance to make sure the internet stays accessible and affordable to all Americans", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from NY.

The regulations are strongly supported by liberals and online companies including Amazon, Netflix, Facebook and Google, and dozens of smaller Web-based companies.

A major objection about the Net neutrality rules was the FCC's decision to classify broadband as a more highly regulated utilitylike service under Title 2 of federal telecommunications law.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Wednesday that the solution was for lawmakers to draft Net neutrality legislation "that would safeguard consumers but still prevent regulators from stifling innovation".
