Moscow does not rule out Iran withdrawing from the nuclear deal with world powers, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said at a session of the Valdai worldwide discussion club on Tuesday. "I believe that the scenario of Iran's withdrawal from the agreement can't be fully ruled out, if Iran does not agree with the other participants on a basis suitable for it", TASS quoted Ryabkov as saying.

MOSCOW, Russia - Iran's foreign minister was in Moscow on Monday, May 14, as Russia tries to keep the Iran nuclear deal alive in the wake of Washington's pull-out, pushing it into rare cooperation with Europe.

"It was a nice and constructive meeting", Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency. "It will allow you to make your own positive contribution to help protect Iran's legitimate national interests and peace and stability in the region". "Our meetings will continue during the upcoming two weeks". Germany and France have significant trade links with Iran and remain committed to the nuclear agreement, as does Britain, and the three countries' foreign ministers plan to meet on Tuesday to discuss it.

The deal between Iran and six world powers lifted most worldwide sanctions in 2016 in return for Tehran curbing its nuclear programme, under strict surveillance by the United Nations, to stockpile enriched uranium for an atomic bomb.

Highlighting just how hard it will be, the U.S. Treasury announced on Tuesday more sanctions, including on Iran's central bank governor, just minutes before the Brussels meeting was due to begin.

Trump shot back, claiming in a tweet on Saturday that Tehran had exploited the lifting of sanctions to bolster its military and increased its defence spending by 40 percent since 2015, when the pact was agreed.

The EU on Tuesday made clear to Iran that if it adheres to the nuclear deal repudiated by the U.S., the EU will do so too.

Zarif will then travel to Brussels for talks with the European countries that are party to the JCPOA on the possibility of preserving the accord with Iran's interests at its heart.

Johnson and Mogherini said those issues would be discussed at another time.

"The final aim of these negotiations is to seek assurances that the interests of the Iranian nation will be defended", Zarif said at the start of a meeting with Lavrov.

He said: "What we are going to do tomorrow in Brussels is we are going to have a conversation about what we can do to help United Kingdom firms, European firms have some confidence that they can still do business".

"We are waiting now for how the decision-makers in the European Union will react".

"If you cannot get such a strong guarantee from them, and I see it very unlikely that you can, we could not move and continue like this anymore".

"We will see how (European countries) would guarantee that Iran's interests will be protected if Teheran remains in the agreement", said the Iranian Foreign Minister. European companies could still face big fines, asset seizures and even criminal charges in the US.
