The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has partially upheld the appeal filed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) against the decision issued by the FIFA Appeal Committee (the FIFA AC) on 20 December 2017 (the FIFA AC Decision) in which a 6-month period of ineligibility was imposed on the Peruvian football player Paolo Guerrero further to an anti-doping rule violation (presence of Benzoylecgonine metabolites). Peru's captain and all-time leading scorer, Guerrero has become a lightning rod for Peru supporters, who showed up in masses to welcome him back to Lima after the CAS ruling was handed down.

The 34-year-old had an initial one-year ban reduced to six months by Federation Internationale de Football Association and he returned to action for Brazilian club Flamengo earlier this month before being named in his country's provisional squad for their first World Cup since 1982.

World footballers' union FIFPro has condemned the 14-month drugs ban that will rule Peru's captain and record goalscorer Paolo Guerrero out of the World Cup as "unfair and disproportionate".

CAS heard the case after an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency, which had originally requested a 22-month ban.

News of extension of the ban was not well received among Peru fans.

The bishop argued that Jesus was once thought to be of unsound mind and said that Christians need to follow his example. He said: "I'm always nervous at weddings because it is such an important day for the couple - whoever they are".

The statement added: "The CAS Panel confirmed the existence of an ADRV (anti-doping rule violation) committed by Mr Guerrero but also accepted that he did not attempt to enhance his performance by ingesting the prohibited substance".

"What can't be understood is how they can give me a sanction of 14 months, take away my dream which was play a World Cup, without any justification or argument that made sense to me or even you guys".

Guerrero has 32 goals for his country in 86 appearances.

Bolivia fielded an ineligible player in a 2-0 win over Peru, and that result was overturned to a 3-0 loss by default. A fan said that he had been looking forward to the World Cup, but with Guerrero's ban, there was nothing to be excited about anymore. Without the three extra points, Peru would have fallen below Chile and Paraguay in the standings and out of contention.
