4,000 employees of Google have already signed a petition (probably made in Google Forms) which asks the company to immediately cancel the project and make a policy that would prevent the company from getting involved with the military ever again.
In March, Gizmodo disclosed that Google was working with the Defense Department to improve AI examining drone footage as part of an action called as Project Maven. It came as Gizmodo reported that around a dozen Google employees had recently resigned over the firm's ties to Maven.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that more than 90 academics have this week released an open letter that has called on Google to end its work on Project Maven and to support an global treaty prohibiting autonomous weapons systems.
While Google previously assured employees that its partnership with the Pentagon is "specifically scoped to be for non-offensive purposes" and only uses "open-source object recognition software available to any Google Cloud customer", that reportedly wasn't enough for these employees, and the Gizmodo story tries to explain their thought process.
Gizmodo spoke to a number of the employees, who voiced their concerns and anger at the Google's continued collaboration with a military programme.
"I tried to remind myself right that Google's decisions are not my decisions".
In addition to the petition circulating inside Google, the Tech Workers Coalition launched a petition in April demanding that Google abandon its work on Maven and that other major tech companies, including IBM and Amazon, refuse to work with the U.S. Defence Department.
While the technology giant has claimed that the work was "for non-offensive purposes", previous USA government memos make it clear the basis of the project is to "enhance military decision-making".
"I'm not personally responsible for everything that they do". In April that over 3,000 Google employees signed the petition. The letter says Google should "commit to not weaponizing its technology" and terminate its contract with the DoD. But I do feel responsibility when I see something that I should escalate it. "The technology is used to flag images for human review and is meant to save lives and save people from having to do highly tedious work".
One of the resigning employees says this step should have been taken before Google agreed the contract.
"Any military use of machine learning naturally raises valid concerns. We're actively discussing this important topic internally and with others as we continue to develop policies and safeguards around the development and use of our machine learning technologies".
Over the last couple of months, I've been less and less impressed with the response and the way people's concerns are being treated and listened to.
Fortune approached Google for comment about these resignations and will update this post if it responds.
