Speaking alongside South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-Wha at the State Department, Pompeo said Friday he thinks the USA and North Korea are largely on the same page in expectations for the June 12 encounter, which will see a sitting us president meet the leader of North Korea for the first time.

Speaking early Thursday on an air base tarmac with the former detainees by his side, Trump called it a "great honor" to welcome the men to the USA, but said "the true honor is going to be if we have a victory in getting rid of nuclear weapons".

Under an American flag and dark night sky, President Donald Trump personally welcomed home three American detainees Thursday morning after they were released from North Korea.

It said the three Americans appeared to be in good condition and were all able to board the plane in Pyongyang without assistance.

Trump announced on May 10 that he would meet with Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12. But he said he thinks Kim has a good understanding of what the USA means by all of that.

Their plane made brief stops at a United States air base in Japan and in Alaska en route to Washington.

Additionally, Pompeo noted that his talks with Kim Jong Un were "warm" and "constructive", as he promised the leader us economic help if North Korea indeed denuclearizes the peninsula.

One of the detainees was jailed in 2015, the other two have been in prison for just over a year.

The president is accompanied by first lady Melania Trump. Kim Hak-song was held over "anti-state activities" and Tony Kim was accused of committing unspecified criminal acts meant to overthrow the government.

Tony Kim, also known as Kim Sang-duk, also worked at PUST.

But tensions have since eased greatly, starting around the time of the North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics in South Korea in February.

Media reports said USA nationals Kim Hak-song, Kim Dong-chul and Tony Kim, who is also known as Kim Sang-duk, had been moved from a labor camp to a hotel on the outskirts of Pyongyang early last month.

He later told a Diet committee, "It's extremely important to make sure (the global community) keeps pressure on North Korea so that there are no loopholes".

Speaking to the media on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews Air Force Base, Kim Dong Chul said his release felt "like a dream".

"If North Korea takes bold action to quickly denuclearise, the United States is prepared to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity on the par with our South Korean friends", Pompeo told a news conference after talks with his South Korean counterpart in Washington.

Trump, meanwhile, has bragged that he had done what President Barack Obama couldn't in getting the hostages released.

"The next few weeks will be critical, requiring airtight coordination between our two countries", Kang said.

"So those were the initial steps that the North Koreans took". One, people wonder if North Korea's definition of denuclearization is the same as the United States'.

Most of the nuclear program was dismantled within months and nuclear material was shipped out of the country.

Political prisoners are often sent to separate prisons - usually brutal labour camps, which involve hard physical work such as mining and logging.

"This administration is hardly forgiving", she said.
