Southwest gives $6k to every customer on deadly flight

As the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) continues its investigation into the fatal engine explosion that killed one woman and forced Southwest Airlines flight 1380 to make an emergency landing Tuesday, new reports have shed further light on the airline's disregard for passenger safety and opposition to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety regulations following an nearly identical incident in 2016.

The Federal Aviation Administration order covers an estimated 352 CFM International engines in the USA that have made at least 30,000 flights, the agency said in a statement on Friday. The directive stipulates that these inspections must be completed within the next 20 days. The FAA is expected to follow CFM's lead and set the same conditions.

The Federal Aviation Administration has ordered airlines to inspect certain older CFM56-7B turbofan engines. The NTSB said a fan blade separated from the fan disk and showed evidence consistent with fatigue crack growth.

A passenger who was partially sucked out of a broken window caused by the explosion subsequently died.

The inspections ordered are a sharp step-up from actions by both the European and U.S. regulators after a Southwest flight in August 2016 made a safe emergency landing in Pensacola, Florida, after a fan blade separated from the same type of engine and debris ripped a hole above the left wing.

The airline confirmed news reports from passengers that it had sent the cheques along with US$1,000 travel vouchers.

A fan blade broke off in flight Tuesday on the CFM56-7B engine, triggering a chain of events that shattered a window on 737.

The order expands a previous European directive, issued in response to the 2016 incident, and was issued in coordination with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, making mandatory a fresh recommendation from engine maker CFM International.

Southwest had initially pushed back against CFM International's recommendation that inspections be completed within 12 months and had asked for more time past year, reported The Associated Press.

CFM, jointly owned by General Electric Co and France's Safran, also recommended inspections by the end of August for fan blades with 20,000 cycles, and inspections of all other fan blades when they reach 20,000 cycles.

But now, an accelerated program is underway to inspect the engines using high-tech ultrasound and other devices that can detect metal fatigue not seen by the naked eye. In that earlier case, a fan blade fractured and broke loose, bouncing in front of the engine's protective cover and then striking the plane, causing it to lose pressure.

Passenger Marty Martinez shared photographs and videos of himself on Facebook as the plane made its descent. "They didn't get the inspections done, and when the FAA was going to put out (an order) they all objected". The agency announced on Wednesday it would issue those orders within weeks. After Tuesday's deadly blast, Southwest said it would accelerate trial of these motors and finish the assignment inside 30 days. More than 150 of those have already been checked, it said. Inspections take between two and four hours per engine, according to the FAA and manufacturer.
