The trio, Vice-Chairman Consolata Nkatha, Commissioners Paul Kurgat and Margaret Mwachanya, told a hurriedly-convened press conference in Nairobi that for far too long and way too many times Wafula Chebukati, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in hard times and gives directions when needed.
The commissioners said they made a decision to step down after Ezra Chiloba, chief executive of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), was suspended pending an audit on procurement matters.
Kenya's electoral body was on Monday thrown into turmoil after three commissioners resigned, citing loss of confidence in the chairman.
"The Ruto wing of IEBC has quit.Ruto wants Chiloba back by all means. We must banish external players from the Commission Boardrooms and reclaim the Commission's independence" they said in the statement.
Three IEBC commissioners have resigned with immediate effect.
Woolworths supermarkets hit by IT outage
Registers have reportedly shut down at all Woolworths stores across Australia due to a technical outage. ZDNet understands the glitch didn't make its way to all stores, however, with some operating as usual.
The commissioners said they chose to quit because they no longer had faith in IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati's leadership.
"The chairman has in several instances failed to be rye steady and stable hand to steer the commission ship", Ms Mwachanya said in a joint statement.
The trio further disclosed that the decision to suspend Chiloba was made in absence of some of the Commissioners.
And a source, who enjoys warm relationship with DP Ruto, says the resignation emanated from the country's second in command because he was not "comfortable" with Chiloba's suspension.
"Therefore the events related to the purported vote have already shaken our already feeble confidence in the chair. All of which are against the laid down laws that govern the conduct of the commission leadership and staff", they added.
