"This trove is the biggest single discovery of Bluetooth coins in the southern Baltic Sea region and is therefore of great significance", the lead archaeologist, Michael Schirren, told news agency DPA.

That said, it is worth noting this is not the first discovery from amateur treasure hunters, Live Science reported. As it turned out, was shining not a piece of foil, and the product of silver.

René Schön and his pupil Luca Malaschnitschenko were using metal detectors on Germany's Rügen island when they found a piece of metal.

The state archaeology office became involved and the amateur archeologists were asked to keep the find a secret until professionals could plan the major dig.

However they were sworn to secrecy until the experts could move in and unearth the entire treasure.

Malaschnitschenko and Schoen were invited to participate in the recovery.

On the East German island of rügen in the Baltic sea were found hundreds of silver coins, rings, pearls and bracelets.

In the five House seats now held by a Republican, 46 percent of voters prefer the GOP candidate and 44 percent the Democrat. If the result holds in November, it could spell trouble for the five Republican representatives in the state.

A coin unearthed at the dig.

But when the pair cleaned it, they understood it was more precious. After losing power, Bluetooth fled to Pomerania, a region that includes parts of modern northeast Germany and western Poland, according to USA Today. According to the Guardian, the oldest of the coins comes from the year 714, while the most recent one dates back to the year 983. These dates indicate that the treasure was likely buried in the late 980s, when Bluetooth lost a battle against his rebellious son, Sweyn Forkbeard.

"We have here the rare case of a discovery that appears to corroborate historical sources", archaeologist Detlef Jantzen said.

Harald Bluetooth, which introduced Christianity to Denmark in the tenth century, is an important historical figure in Northern Europe.

It inspired the name of Bluetooth technology invented by Swedish telecom company Ericsson.

The company named the technology, developed to wirelessly unite computers with cellular devices, after the king for his ability to unite ancient Scandinavia.
