Russian Federation threatens retaliation as United States & its allies launch attack on Syria

Russia Slams U.S.-led Strikes on Syria Says Country Had'Chance for Peaceful Future Russian warns of 'consequences' after US-led strikes on Syria

After all, Moscow still wields considerable control over the direction of the war. The United States claimed to have met its obligations, while Russian Federation said it could not confirm.

Instead, it appears that the western coalition's limited strikes did little to change the facts on the ground.

According to The Sunday Times, even though Russian and United Kingdom submarines have repeatedly been stalking each other in the Mediterranean, the latest incident is the first such underwater clash as tensions between Moscow and London have reached a boiling point.

After the Douma attack, the insurgent group dug in there, Jaish al-Islam, finally agreed to withdraw.

Oil prices jumped to their highest level in more than three years on Wednesday after Trump's missile warning, and USA stock index futures fell sharply amid alarm over possible Russian-U.S. conflict over Syria.

The inspectors arrived on Saturday, but in a statement posted on Twitter, the British delegation said Russian Federation and Syria had not yet allowed inspectors access to Douma. "You must look at reality". This was playing with fire after Russia - Syria's strongest ally - had warned that a missile attack would be met with force by Moscow, raising fears of a straight fight between the United States and Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denounced a strike on Syria launched by the United States and its allies as an "act of aggression" that will exacerbate humanitarian catastrophe in Syria.

"Bashar al-Assad is not our friend", Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny posted Saturday on Twitter.

"The mood is more optimistic today than last week", said Denis Korshilov, head of fixed-income, currency and commodities at Citigroup Inc.in Moscow. "This must be stopped". Moscow has denied involvement. He said he takes "a back seat to no one" in his view of the threat that Russian Federation presents to the US. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said there were no reports of U.S. losses in what he described as a heavy but carefully limited assault.

Also on Sunday, Pope Francis used his weekly address in St. Peter's Square to express his deep concern over the failure of world leaders to come up with a plan to end the violence in Syria.

The statement adds: 'Our priority is to continue to provide the best possible care for Alfie and his parents at this hard time'. A lawyer representing the couple had asked appeal judges to rule that Alfie should be allowed to travel to a foreign hospital.

Russia's response Saturday underscored Putin's effort to use Syria to help portray himself as a guarantor of global stability, despite the torrent of western criticism.

A Russian envoy to the United Nations on Saturday accused the United States of violating worldwide law by conducting airstrikes against Syria without the approval of the Security Council.

The Russians say 71 missiles were shot down by Syrian systems. Moscow's response shows Washington appears to have succeeded in delivering a blow that did not provoke Russian Federation militarily. They said they understood the air strikes had "the sole objective to prevent further use of chemical weapons and chemical substances as weapons by the Syrian regime to kill its own people".

Over the past week, pro-Kremlin officials, independent analysts and the state-allied news media described the situation in Syria as a uniquely risky moment.

The US previously expelled Russian diplomats and sanctioned Russia for a suspected nerve-agent attack against a former spy in Britain and other actions. Putin and Macron instructed their foreign and defense ministers to maintain close contact to "de-escalate the situation", the Kremlin said.

President Donald Trump announced on Friday he ordered strikes on the Syrian regime in response to a chemical weapons attack last weekend.

France's U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre said the result of the vote sends "a clear message" that Security Council members recognized the need for the airstrikes, and "their proportional and targeted nature".

On the air strikes, he repeated the Russian assertion that two-thirds of the more than 100 missiles fired into Syria on Saturday had failed to reach their targets.
