Philadelphia District Attorney Says Meek Mill Conviction Should Be Tossed

Meek Mill Philadelphia DA says Meek Mill should get a new trial sparking hopes for release
Preston Stone | 17 April, 2018, 19:57

Judge Genece Brinkley refused to free him on bail after the announcement from the Philadelphia district attorney's office during a hearing. Another hearing was advised by her June. "This position was taken due to serious issues regarding the credibility of the arresting officer in the case, Officer Reginald Graham", tweeted Ben Waxman, spokesman for Philly DA Larry Krasner. The now-retired officer was among a list of police officers the prosecutor's office has sought to keep off the stand in cases across the city because of credibility questions. However, Judge Brinkley, who initially sentenced the rapper in November 2017 to two to four years in jail for violating his probation, revealed that she has made a decision to wait until June to hear more about this case. On April 3, despite growing vocal support from both the Philadelphia District Attorney's office and Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolfe, Judge Brinkley stated that Mill would remain in jail.

"They obviously have recognized and determined the criminal behavior of the arresting officer, which dates back prior to Meek's arrest", he said. While Meek was denied release yesterday, he did get a chance to speak with CNN's Don Lemon about the upcoming trial and why people should vote for politicians who support justice reform.

Meek Mill's mum, grandmother and 6-year-old son, Papi, were in the rally beyond the courthouse, which erupted into cheers immediately after the statement of the district attorney. "He picks me up from school".

Brinkley has been the topic of tough criticism against Mill's lawyers.

The judge defended herself earlier that month, stating that the court has "has impartially and without bias presided over a number of proceeding in this matter since 2008". The sentence sparked backlash not only because many saw it as being too harsh but because the judge acted against the recommendations of the prosecution and Mill's probation officer.
