Speaking after Amber Rudd announced that a new task force would be set up to help Commonwealth immigrants facing deportation he said the government should "guarantee the status of all the Windrush children caught up in this crisis".

"This is a day of national shame, and it has come about because of a "hostile environment" and a policy that was begun under her Prime Minister".

Labour's David Lammy said on Monday that it was a "day of national shame".

"It's disgraceful that the rights of the Windrush Generation have been brought into question by this government and that some have been wrongfully deported", said Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party.

"Can the Secretary of State tell us how many people have been deported?" The exact number of people without official documents is unknown.

He continued: "It is her department that has deported them".

Hitting out at "far-right rhetoric", he insisted Rudd "should know" how many people had been wrongly made to return to their countries of origin.

"Will the Secretary of State apologise properly?"

The Migration Observatory at Oxford University estimates there are 500,000 people resident in the United Kingdom who were born in a Commonwealth country and arrived before 1971.

"This should not happen to people who have been longstanding pillars of our community", he said.

Secrets behind resignation of 3 IEBC commissioners
All of which are against the laid down laws that govern the conduct of the commission leadership and staff", they added. The trio further disclosed that the decision to suspend Chiloba was made in absence of some of the Commissioners.

"That admiration remains in place".

In the Commons on Monday, Ms Rudd acknowledged the Home Office had become "too concerned with policy and strategy" at the expense of the individual. This is about individuals.

'We have seen the individual stories, and they have been, some of them, bad to hear, and that is why I have acted.' She was challenged over an interview in which immigration minister Caroline Nokes appeared to confirm that some Windrush migrants had been wrongly deported. "That is why I have acted".

"Potentially they have been and I'm very conscious that it's very much in error, and that's an error that I want to put right", Nokes told Channel 4. "That is why I am so committed to ensuring that there is no cost involved".

Dubbed the Windrush generation after the cruise ship that brought one of the first large groups of West Indians to Britain, anyone who entered the United Kingdom before 1973 is legally entitled to live in the country.

However, the Home Office did not keep a record of those granted leave to remain or issue any paperwork confirming it, meaning it is hard for the individuals to now prove they are in the United Kingdom legally.

Guy Hewitt, the London-born High Commissioner to Barbados, told BBC radio that because the "Windrush generation" "came from British colonies which were not independent they felt they were British subjects, they felt there was no need for them to recognize their status".

People born in Jamaica and other Caribbean countries are thought to be more affected than those from other Commonwealth nations, as they were more likely to arrive on their parents' passports without their own ID documents.

63-year-old mechanic, Albert Thompson, was evicted and asked for £54,000 to pay for radiotherapy cancer treatment.

On 15 April 2018, Nokes previously said in an online statement: 'I know that establishing status after so many years may be hard for some people but we will do everything we can to assist them.
