The parents of a boy at the centre of a life-support treatment battle are to launch another legal challenge.

Alfie's father Tom Evans speaks outside Alder Hey hospital.

The plea comes after police received reports members of the 250,000-strong Facebook group Alfie's Army were verbally abusing and intimidating medics.

Tom Evans, 21, and Kate James, 20, will ask court of appeal judges on Monday to allow their 23-month-old son, Alfie Evans, to continue to receive treatment.

Judges have heard how Alfie, born in May 2016, is in a "semi-vegetative state" and has a degenerative neurological condition that doctors have been unable to diagnose definitively.

Yesterday afternoon, appeal judges Lord Justice Davis, Lady Justice King and Lord Justice Moylan upheld a ruling by high court judge Justice Hayden, who endorsed a detailed plan put forward by Alder Hey doctors for withdrawing life-support treatment.

Barrister Paul Diamond said the couple might make a further appeal to the Supreme Court.

'We just wanted to take our son to give him the chance he deserves'.

Alder Hey said noise from protesters outside the hospital on Sunday night had disturbed other young patients.

Mr Evans emerged from the hospital two hours after the decision was given by the court in London.

'We would like to remind the public that this is a hospital for sick children and it should not be forgotten that many families are going through extremely challenging and emotional times.

"I will update you on where we go from here and if we get permission then that would be a good reason to demonstrate peacefully".

However, Alfie's parents are determined to keep fighting.

A lawyer representing the couple had asked appeal judges to rule that Alfie should be allowed to travel to a foreign hospital.

Meanwhile, Mr Evans and Ms James have apologised to families and staff at the hospital following reports of intimidation by protesters.

Evans has said doctors at Alder Hey children's hospital, in Liverpool, refused to let him remove Alfie from the premises.

The statement adds: 'Our priority is to continue to provide the best possible care for Alfie and his parents at this hard time'.
