Russian Federation says the chemical attack in Syria that has brought the world to the brink of war was staged by a foreign secret service.

Russian Federation has been a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and has helped turn the tide of war in his favour since entering the conflict in September 2015.

No military measures were immediately announced, but in a clear warning to the USA and its allies, Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi of the Russian military's General Staff said Moscow could boost Syria's Soviet-era air defense assets with batteries of state-of-the-art S-300 missiles.

Russian Federation and Syria have said there was no evidence of a chemical weapons attack. "It would provoke a retaliation operation by government forces and the White Helmets were to use it to stage a provocation with an alleged use of chemical weapons", he said.

The US ambassador to the United Nations said Donald Trump "has not yet made a decision about possible actions in Syria".

The strikes - the strongest concerted action yet by Western forces in Syria - were launched at 9 p.m. ET, as most of Europe and the Middle East was shrouded in darkness.

"This is grotesque, it is a blatant lie, it is the worst piece of fake news we've yet seen from the Russian propaganda machine", Pierce told reporters.

Syria attack: Russian Federation and Iran WILL PAY next warns former Bush counsel
A fact-finding mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is expected to arrive in Douma on Saturday. On Wednesday, the US President said the missiles were "coming", but on Thursday he tweeted that he had "never said when".

The Syrian Armed Forces said in a statement that 110 missiles were fired on Syrian targets and that the country's defense systems "intercepted most of the missiles, but some hit targets including the Research Center in Barzeh".

No evidence has been shared by Macron, Lavrov or the Russian defence ministry.

While a full assessment has not yet been completed, "we believe that the action was successful", she said.

Lavrov said Russian experts have already inspected the site of the alleged attack and found no trace of chemical weapons, adding without elaboration that Moscow has "irrefutable information that it was another fabrication".

The Ministry claims the air strikes were a response to the "success" of Al Assad's Syrian army in liberating their territory from global terrorism.

On Thursday, French president Emmanuel Macron said he had "proof that chemical weapons - at least chlorine gas", was used by the Assad regime.

However, Iran - another key ally of the Assad government - condemned the strikes.

The UN Security Council overwhelmingly rejected a Russian resolution calling for condemnation of "aggression" by the United States, United Kingdom and France against Syria.
