My hope was that maybe if he actually met a survivor he might become more empathetic to what we're experiencing, ' said Kaylee. "He kind of indicated it didn't rise to the degree of a Larry Nassar, you know, like it's just like murder how there are different degrees, and we both said no degree is okay".
"What he did not tell us is that Ms. Viventi is his lawyer". She said Engler told her that they would not be able to work together until civil litigation was over and then asked if he wrote her a check for $250,000 if she would accept it.
At the Board of Trustees meeting on Friday, Lorincz said she didn't realize that Viventi was Engler's lawyer until days later.
When my Mom and I stopped in to sign up to speak at this morning's meeting a few weeks ago, we happened to see President Engler.
"My interpretation of the discussion was not that he was saying I'm offering you $250,000, it was a discussion about the civil litigation and how it was going on", said Guerrant, who added that she was in attendance for the meeting.
Lorincz explained to Engler that she did not want money but wanted to help the school create change.
"He also said that he had met with Rachel Denhollender, and that she gave him a number". "I have NEVER talked about money with anyone, not even my own attorney". Instead, she says, the pair were ushered into a conference room in which Engler was joined by an MSU counsel, Carol Viventi, who was not introduced as a lawyer at the time. That's what a civil case is about, money'.
Denhollander said she has never met with Engler.
The teenager revealed this all on Friday at the board meeting she had been going to try and secure a spot at when she had the alleged meeting.
"Mr. Engler then looked directly at me asked, 'Right now if I wrote you a check for $250,000 would you take it?'", 19-year-old Kaylee Lorincz said.
After that meeting it was clear to me that nothing would change and that President Engler viewed meeting me as an opportunity to gain information, continuing to deflect and defend.
"I felt like I was being bullied into saying something and that if Rachael gave him a settlement amount, it was okay for me to do it too", Lorincz said.
She persisted and kept speaking, saying MSU tried to make them feel like they (the victims) were the problem and that the school was the victim.
She said she expressed an interest in working with the university to try to improve the way it has handled sexual assault cases on campus.
That lawsuit claims that Michigan State has "fostered a culture in which female victims are discouraged from reporting sexual assaults when those assaults are perpetrated by male athletes, thus protecting the university, the male athletics programs, and the male athletes at the expense of the female victims".
Friday's MSU Board of Trustees meeting could also end being crashed by some students.
"Our memories and interpretations of the March 28 meeting are different than hers".
She said Engler looked angry while she spoke at Friday's meeting. Regardless, since mediation of all claims begins on April 25, there will be an appropriate place for discussions concerning what would be a fair and equitable resolution.
"It's MSU for ya, I guess", Lorincz told reporters after the trustee's meeting.
