No additional strikes against the Assad regime were planned for the time being, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said, following Dunford's comments.

The US warned Russia ahead of the overnight strikes on Syria, US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman said, adding that the military action was not "about the conflict between superpowers". It was not immediately clear if Russian-supplied interceptors were activated.

Anatoly Antonov, Russian ambassador to the U.S, issued a statement on Facebook in response to the strikes on Syria.

The coordinated strikes were in response to the Syrian regime's chemical weapons attack on civilians in Douma, which allied governments say killed at least 60 people and left hundreds more injured over the weekend. President Donald Trump also ordered strikes about the same time past year, also in response to reported chemical weapon usage. Global chemical weapons experts were travelling to Syria to investigate the gas attack by government forces.

The Reuters news agency is reporting that multiple blasts were heard in the Syrian capital Damascus and that smoke is rising from the eastern part of the city.

The Syrian government has also categorically denied the accusation.

Huge blasts were reported around Damascus early today, moments after the US, France, and Britain announced they were striking Syria's chemical weapons capabilities.

France is urging Russia to join in renewed peace efforts after Western missile strikes on Syria aimed at punishing Bashar Assad for an alleged chemical attack, while the Syrian leader was said to have appeared unfazed Sunday in a meeting with Russian politicians.
