He added that he hoped his death was "honorable" and "might serve others". This was also the note that he had sent to the Times.

'The thoroughness, the detail and the careful reasoning in the opinion means that other courts around the nation will be paying attention, ' he said.

"A life of privilege requires actions to balance the harm caused, and the greater the privilege, the greater the responsibility", Buckel added.

"His thoughtful and engaging advocacy broke through many stubborn misconceptions and showed it was possible and necessary for our movement to speak up for bullied, ostracised LGBT young people", she said in a statement to the Huffington Post. "Honorable objective in life invites honorable goal in death", he wrote, according to his note.

Buckel was the lead attorney in a lawsuit involving Brandon Teena, a transgender man who was murdered in Nebraska.

Teena was later portrayed by Hilary Swank in the 1999 film "Boys Don't Cry".

In 2006, he testified on behalf of Lambda Legal before the New Jersey Assembly's Judiciary Committee, urging members to oppose a bill that sought to establish civil unions, instead of marriage equality for same-sex couples.

Susan Sommer, a former Lambda Legal lawyer who is now the general counsel for the mayor's office of criminal justice in NY, told the Times Buckel "was all about justice, but he was also all about what it means to be human".

Kremlin Spokesman Warns Against Syria Strike
And as recently as March 29, Trump mulled ending US military action in Syria now that the Islamic State's presence and power there is decimated.

Camilla Taylor, acting legal director at Lambda Legal, Mr Buckel's former employer, described him as a "brilliant legal visionary".

The statement continued: "Our hearts go out to all who knew David".

He stapled his business card to the note and left behind a longer, neatly typed explanation of his self-immolation. The note was also emailed to several news organisations shortly before his body was found, the newspaper said.

"Pollution ravages our planet, oozing inhabitability via air, soil, water and weather", Buckel wrote in the note. "Our present grows more desperate, our future needs more than what we are doing".

Buckel's self immolation led to passerby's expressing shock and horror upon coming across the man's charred corpse. "He did it out in the open, right near the main entrance".

"We were a little freaked out", said a jogger who stumbled across the gruesome remains before the victim's body was covered with a tarp by first responders.

Twitter was flooded with pain and grief over Buckel's death, with many expressing how deeply Buckel touched their lives.

Buckel devoted a large part of his legal career to fighting for the rights of LGBT individuals.
