"The conscience of the global community carries no doubt to that effect", it added.

The phone talks came after the U.S., U.K., and France launched airstrikes on the Assad regime's alleged chemical weapons facilities in Syria earlier on Saturday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today welcomed Western strikes against Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's regime as "appropriate" in retaliation for Damascus' "inhumane" attacks. "The innocent Syrian people should have been defended long ago", Erdogan added.

"With the joint operation by US, United Kingdom and France on Saturday, the Syrian regime received the message that its massacres wouldn't be left unanswered", Erdoğan told his ruling AK Party supporters in an Istanbul meeting.

The strikes, which hit the capital Damascus as well as two locations near the city of Homs, came following a suspected chemical attack on the Syrian town of Douma last week. The perpetrators of that heinous assault must be held accountable for their actions.

UK PM summons war cabinet over Syria response
Another Conservative MP, former London mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith, tweeted: "We need a clear response to the Syrian chemical outrage".

Government spokesman and Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ said the US did not use the Incirlik air base located in southern Adana province in the attacks.

"Turkey was informed ahead of the attack", he wrote on Twitter. "Base Incirlik was not involved in the strike".

Erdogan, who had a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Theresa May following the strikes, said he would also speak with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Erdogan also said the current situation showed tensions had eased, but that he would continue his talks with his USA and Russian counterparts.
