Boko Haram has freed all the girls abducted from the school in Dapchi, except one, Leah Sharibu, who remains captive because she reportedly refused to renounce her belief in Christianity.

This comes exactly four years after over 200 schoolgirls were abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, a town in Borno state, northeast Nigeria.

"We know that this is not the news parents want to hear after four years of waiting, but we want to be as honest as possible with you".

The President encouraged the parents to keep their hopes alive, noting that the recovery of more than a 100 of the girls that were kidnapped through the Federal Government's determined effort should give confidence that all "hope is not lost".

"Don't give up hope of seeing our daughters back home again". Don't lose faith in this government's ability to fulfill our promise of reuniting you with our daughters.

The statement read, "President Buhari joins the Borno State government, parents of the children and Nigerians in commemorating the fourth anniversary of the sad incident, praying that the event at the daughters' school today will go well".

Buhari gave the assurance Nigerians that as long as he remained the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Chibok girls would never be forgotten and everything would be done to reunite them with their families.

"Children in northeastern Nigeria continue to come under attack at a shocking scale", said Mohamed Malick Fall, UNICEF's Nigeria head.

He called for an end to "all grave violations of children's rights", in that part of Nigeria.

She said that the remaining girls in captivity were suffering untold anguish that could be better imagined than experienced.

The terrorists invaded the school on the night of April 14,2014 and took away the girls.

She became pregnant and "now lives with her young son in an IDP (displaced persons) camp, where she has struggled to integrate with the other women due to language barriers and the stigma of being a "Boko Haram wife", UNICEF said.

On some of the girls that were shown on video pledging loyalty and allegiance to the Boko Haram, the medical personnel said "it is normal that when someone finds himself in such kind of situation of captivity for that length of time, the person may one way or the other subscribe to what the person is doing either willingly or by coercion".

Every year on the anniversary of their daughters' disappearance, the parents gather in Chibok to pray for their safe return.
