The odds are stacked against teachers hoping to persuade the Republican-led Legislature and Ducey to increase education funding by as much as $750 million.

"It's wonderful what a threatened teachers' strike in an election year can get the Republicans to do", Democratic representative Rebecca Rios said.

The grassroots group of Arizona educators has raised the possibility of a walkout like those in Oklahoma and West Virginia, where a nine-day strike resulted in a 5 percent pay raise. "This is about Arizona's economy".

Ducey budgeted nearly $400 million over the next five years to restore some of the recession-era cuts to additional assistance, used to fix buildings, buy buses and even textbooks.

Teachers are demanding 20 percent pay raise and an additional $1 billion for public education after what they say is years of underfunding by the state Legislature.

Ducey says the average teacher earned $48,372 past year. He's also said he would cancel some of the planned spending in his budget and use savings from government efficiencies.

Prior to the announcement, Tuscon teacher and Arizona Educators United organizer Derek Harris told teachers "that we need to be sure that this is not just a pay [increase] for teachers". Harris says at this point, "there's not really anything to trust".

The developments come after weeks of protests at the Capitol and at schools across Arizona fueled by teacher pay successes in West Virginia and Oklahoma. Those teachers shocked their state's leaders by surrounding their capitols and demanding funding after years of cuts, setting off similar feelings in other Republican states.

The person added: "On Monday we will be cascading our 18/19 production plans for the next fiscal year to our workforce". The auto giant has cited "continuing headwinds" impacting the vehicle industry for the decision.

Earlier Thursday, a proposal emerged in the Arizona House.

Kathy Hoover, a Kofa High School teacher for 13 years, said many teachers question the source of the funding. John Elegood, a Kofa High School teacher said. Under his proposal, average teacher pay would go to $58,130 by the start of 2020, Ducey said, without taking money he promised earlier in the year to restore previous funding cuts.

"I'm impressed." On Wednesday, parents, teachers, and students held walk-ins at more than 1,000 Arizona schools. "This investment will be in addition to the $371 million in district additional assistance which will provide flexible funding for Arizona schools' most pressing needs - fixing school infrastructure, modernizing curriculum, school buses and updating classroom technologies".

May and other teachers who are a part of the #WearRedForEd movement want a 20 percent increase next year. But he already proposed $100 million in his budget plan as a start to restoring almost $400 million cuts made earlier in the decade - including $117 million he cut in 2015.

"A company who found out that there could be a breach wouldn't have to notify consumers until an investigation was complete, and we were finding that sometimes consumers wouldn't find out for six months to a year after this happened, so by that time, the damage was already done", said Mia Garcia, a spokeswoman for the Attorney General.

Larry Frederick, a music teacher at Lincoln, said he helped organize the walk-in "to raise awareness of the needs for education and raise support for public education in Arizona".

Mabante, a single mother with 18 year of teaching experience, said she makes $12.33 an hour during a 32.5-hour workweek and also wants to see an increase in teacher compensation.
