During the incessant rumours last summer, Apple was rumoured to be launching a gold version of the iPhone X.

Apple reportedly warned employees in an internal memo that it "caught 29 leakers" past year and that 12 were arrested, adding that workers who disclose information to the media have "everything to lose".

To help stop leaks, Apple is urging its employees to be wary of reporters and media outlets who may try to befriend them in exchange for inside information.

"While it may seem flattering to be approached, it's important to remember that you're getting played", the memo states. The memo highlights how earlier this year, they caught and fired an employee who leaked details from an internal meeting. It adds that in these situations, Apple staffers have "everything to lose" if they give in.

Apple ended the threatening memo with a plea to employees to consider "the impact of their actions", on the rest of their colleagues. Employees will likely also fear leaking to correct inaccurate information being passed around publicly.

The March date won't be when services start being pulled but is instead when Apple will make its plan public, allowing users to make ample preparations for the service to close.

The memo was published as an internal company blog post. Twelve of those leakers were arrested.

One person was caught after sharing "a link to the gold master of iOS 11" with the press ahead of Apple's September iPhone X event, the memo indicates. In 2017, Apple caught 29 leakers. Chances are, the March 2019 announcement window and subsequent tail off is a result of forecasting for where they see iTunes Store sales trending over the next 12 months. "The potential criminal consequences of leaking are real", says Tom Moyer of Global Security, "and that can become part of your personal and professional identity forever".

The company did not provide details on the dozen arrests that it said took place past year, but said those included "employees, contractors and some partners in Apple's supply chain".
