Just one alcoholic drink a day could shorten your life, study says

Drinking alcohol linked to lower life expectancy Drinking alcohol linked to lower life expectancy

The more you drink, the higher your risk, the study says.

They recommend a woman consumes no more than 11 standard drinks or 110g of pure alcohol each week while men are allowed up to 17 standard drinks or 170g pure alcohol a week.

The team found no evidence supporting a lower alcohol limit for women than for men.

"Overall, for a 40-year-old man, the estimated reduction in life expectancy is almost five years for alcohol consumption of more than 350g per week, for a 40-year-old woman it is around four years, compared to consumption of less than 100g per week". Some countries have much higher ceilings. For instance, Spain and Romania set the upper limit for men at the equivalent of 20 drinks each week.

"These data support adoption of lower limits of alcohol consumption than are recommended in most current guidelines", the report added.

The study "is a serious wake-up call for many countries", Jeremy Pearson of the British Heart Foundation said in a statement.

"The paper estimates a 40-year-old drinking four units a day above the guidelines has roughly two years lower life expectancy", said David Spiegelhalter, a risk expert at Britain's University of Cambridge who was not involved in the study.

That's about 10 standard drinks a week and is significantly lower than the no more than two-a-day limit imposed under official Australian Guidelines.

Alcohol consumption was found to be associated with a lower risk of non-fatal heart attacks but researchers point out that this must be weighed against increased risk of potentially fatal heart disease. They made a point of excluding people who had a known history of heart problems at the time they had entered a study.

They found that the more people drank, the higher their risk of death compared with people who drank less.

For the study, 21 people were randomly assigned to drink either a mixture of alcohol and juice, or juice alone.

"Many people in the United Kingdom regularly drink over what's recommended" she said. "What we now show is that this hormone then travels in the blood to a specific part of the brain, the hypothalamus, to stimulate thirst, thereby preventing dehydration", said Dr. Kliewer.

Notably, the heavier drinkers were less likely to have a heart attack.

"Around half of people in the study reported drinking more than 100 grams (or 10 standard drinks) of alcohol per week and nearly 10 per cent drank more than 350 grams per week".

The study may mean many Americans are reaching their weekly totals in one night. Research that rolls together previous studies can be problematic if they aren't similar enough, though this one appears to have done a good job at overcoming that obstacle and combining comparable data, Jernigan said.

UT Southwestern researchers, in their study, have identified a hormone that acts on the brain to increase the desire to drink water in response to specific nutrient stresses that can cause dehydration.

Another patron, Jaussi Ruotsalainen, a tourist from Finland, said he rarely drinks because he has two young kids at home.
