ESPN+ launches Disney's $4.99 sports streaming service
13 April, 2018, 06:22
Created to supplement its flagship ESPN cable network, ESPN+ is Disney's first effort to attract paying streaming subscribers. A large amount of this content it the type of stuff you could have been streaming for free on the WatchESPN app until now. However, it doesn't offer access to content on ESPN; this is a supplemental app, and won't include NFL or NBA games, but will include MLB and MLS. That means that if you're, say, a Yankees fan living in NY, you won't be able to watch your team on ESPN+ due to the blackouts.
The service costs $4.99 a month.
ESPN is getting in on the streaming wars.
The direct-to-consumer streaming service ESPN+, which launches today, will support the Apple TV app with listings that let viewers tune in directly to live sporting events through the app.
The service is also promising more than 100 days of coverage from 31 PGA Tour events, hundreds of tennis matches from tournaments like Wimbledon and the U.S. Open as well as hundreds of rugby and cricket matches. During the first week of launch (April 12-18), fans are being offered a special extended 30-day free trial subscription backed by American Express.
In the beginning, the biggest challenge that ESPN+ will face is convincing people that it's not just some paid mishmash of stuff that ESPN finds unworthy of its core, traditional channels. The service will include other original content and shows like Detail, a basketball analysis show hosted by Kobe Bryant.

What events can I watch, exactly? ESPN+ says you'll still see the adverts in the regular breaks punctuating live sports content, for example.
ESPN+ is only available in the States, and the company says there are no plans to expand to other countries right now, which makes sense considering it would be tough to get all of these license agreements elsewhere.
ESPN+ also won't have a standalone app: It's actually baked into the main ESPN app for iOS, Apple TV, Android, Amazon devices, as well as the web.
The new ESPN App delivers a unique experience to every fan, while also enabling meaningful curation and presentation from ESPN's unmatched storytellers, journalists and content creators.
