Valve Updates Steam's Privacy Settings

Steam Spy shutting down Steam Spy ceases operations after Valve changes privacy settings

Steam Spy, one of the most valuable tools for analyzing product performance on Steam, is ceasing operation following an update to Steam's privacy settings.

Galyonkin also clarified that making everyone's game library private by default is separate from the changes Valve discussed in its blog post. Mark Zuckerberg is now in his second day of Congressional testimony related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal and new European Union privacy laws are set to take effect next month. Steam users now have the option of selecting who can view their profile's "game details", including the list of games purchased or wishlisted, along with achievements and playtime.

On April 10, 2018, Valve announced a change to Steam's default privacy settings. You have even more control when it comes to your play time for each title, as you can elect to hide that from everyone even if other parts of your profile are set to public or friends only. The new privacy system allows users to hide their game details and habits.

In a later update, online status is to be expanded to include not only Online, Away, and Offline options, but also an Invisible mode that presents as Offline while allowing access to friends lists and Steam's messaging service. In Valve's own words, this is so that "You no longer need to nervously laugh it off as a bug when your friends notice the 4,000+ hours you've put into Ricochet".

Steam Spy has been quite useful if you're in the business of reporting on video games.

Started by Sergey Galyonkin in 2015, the site helped developers, publishers and journalists analyze sales figures and identify emerging trends and genres within the market by scraping players' game libraries. PCGamesN spoke to other devs about the changes; the apparently near-universal opinion was that the loss of the service will impact them as well.

If you typically used SteamSpy for all your Steam analytic needs, those days look like they're coming to an end. Opting in to share data is much better than sneakily implementing the option to opt out of it, but never really realise just how much of your data is being sucked up by both first and third-party companies.
