This is not new, but it is a critical piece of information when you consider whether or not they are going to try and regulate this industry, that is on its own the third largest economic power in the world, behind the United States and China, so that is a really important moment.

Regardless of whether or not Cambridge Analytica did actually access our private messages, the fact that Facebook is only now letting users know that their intimate conversations may have been read by a data firm they unwittingly gave access to their inboxes will make the recovery even more hard for the company.

The leaked data was said to be inappropriately used by Cambridge Analytica in activities allegedly connected with U.S. President Donald Trump's election campaign in 2016.

"In 15 years of covering this particular space, I've always expected a point to come where people say "that's enough and I'm giving too much of my privacy away", Wallbank said. We also learned that a lot of the legislators responsible for regulating Facebook don't fully understand what Facebook is - or how it works.

He also acknowledged that Facebook did not do enough to prevent the use of its tools to spread fake news.

"One of the steps that we need to take now is to go do a full audit of all of Cambridge Analytica's systems to understand what they're doing, whether they still have any data, to make sure they remove all of the data", he said.

Gunzinger speculated that cruise missiles will be used for an unannounced strike on Russian military hardware. Nebenzia plays Russian Federation as the victim: " Russia is being unpardonably threatened", he said.

"We face a number of important issues around privacy, safety, and democracy, and you will rightfully have some hard questions for me to answer", Zuckerberg said.

Sasse said they could agree on that, but he said he was more focused on the "psychological categories around speech".

"There are people in Russian Federation whose job it is to try to exploit our systems and other internet systems and other systems as well", he said. Mr Kogan then sold the data to Cambridge Analytica. Kennedy asked Zuckerberg if Facebook can give users "a greater right to erase" and share data, to which Zuckerberg replied that Facebook already gives those rights to users.

Zuckerberg was unsure of how to answer certain questions including why Facebook didn't ban Cambridge Analytic from the social network and specifically how long Facebook holds on to personal data after accounts have been deleted.

Furthermore, all of Facebook's 2.2 billion users will also see a prompt at the top of their News Feed that gives them quick access to check which apps and websites they are now sharing data with.

Did Facebook violate its own policies with respect to the sharing of user data?
