The encounter came a day before the president fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

President Donald Trump is considering replacing embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin with Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

Mr. Trump hosted Perry at the White House for lunch Monday, but no formal job offer was made, the source says. Should Perry move to the VA, Trump's possible choices include a GOP fundraiser, a former energy company chairman, and a Texas oilman.

"Thank you to the Energy Secretary, Rick Perry".

Shulkin is the latest member of the Trump administration to be embroiled in ethics violations. Shulkin was the only one among Trump appointees to be unanimously confirmed by the Senate. He is a holdover from the Obama administration, where he served as undersecretary for health overseeing medical facilities run by the VA, which provides care for more than 9 million enrolled veterans.

Shulkin told the newspaper that Kelly and President TrumpDonald John TrumpAccuser says Trump should be afraid of the truth Woman behind pro-Trump Facebook page denies being influenced by Russians Shulkin says he has White House approval to root out "subversion" at VA MORE supported the secretary removing staffers who didn't back him. Shulkin is also accused of not being a team player as he supposedly refused to work with Trump appointees in his agency.

The office of VA Inspector General Michael Missal has been asked to investigate a complaint from a member of Shulkin's round-the-clock security detail that he had to accompany Shulkin on a shopping trip to Home Depot and later lug the furniture Shulkin bought into his home, the Associated Press reported. The 11-day trip included three and a half days of official events and cost at least $122,334, the report said. Shulkin was found in an inspector general's report to have violated ethics rules by using taxpayer money to subsidize his wife's $4,300 flight to Europe previous year and improperly accepting tickets to the Wimbledon tennis tournament in London.
