Kurdistan airports open to global flights

Kurd Region Govt cedes control over banks to Baghdad Iraq's PM security detail commander killed in armed clash in Salahuddin province

In an official statement, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared the global flight ban in the Kurdistan Region lifted, allowing flights to resume from both Erbil and Sulaimani airports after more than five months of being under embargo.

The airports of Erbil and Sulaimaniyah would again be "open to global flights", he said in a statement.

The move "aims to facilitate the travel of citizens" through the two airports, the statement said.

The airports are due to open "within a few days" government spokesman Saad al-Hadithi told The Associated Press.

He also said that a new security directorate will be established to protect the airports in the Kurdish region and it will be under command and control of the federal Interior Ministry.

"This will depend on how long it takes for employees of the central government to start working in the airports", he said.

It was not immediately clear whether the region would continue to maintain its independent visa system.

The prime minister said the ban was lifted "after local authorities in the Kurdish region accepted the return of the two airports to the federal authority".

Tensions rose between Baghdad and the region of Kurdistan after the Kurds held a controversial referendum last September to approve the independence of the Kurdistan region and the disputed areas.

Baghdad imposed the blockade in September after Iraqi Kurdistan voted for independence in a non-binding referendum.

The ban was part of a series of penalties imposed on the Kurds to quash the poll. Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga forces took control of the northern province of Kirkuk, home to key oilfields, in June 2014 after federal forces withdrew in the face of an offensive by the Islamic State group.
