Economic analyst Lawrence "Larry" Kudlow appears on CNBC at the New York Stock Exchange, (NYSE) in New York, U.S., March 7, 2018.

When asked last week about the possibility of joining the Trump administration, Kudlow told CNBC he didn't "want to talk through all those scenarios".

Economist and TV personality Larry Kudlow is a leading contender to replace Gary Cohn as the head of the National Economic Council, CBS News' Major Garrett reports.

That's according to reports Saturday that fingers Liddell as the likely next head of the National Economic Council, the policymaking advisory body that is now led by Gary Cohn.

Kudlow will reportedly take the job if he is offered it, a source familiar with his thinking told CNBC Monday.

For example, Sen. Orrin Hatch, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee - which has jurisdiction over global trade issues - has warned higher prices caused by the steel tariffs could undermine the effects of the recent tax cut bill for middle-class voters.

Mr. Cohn announced his resignation this past week after a battle over the president's economic policy and his longstanding desire to impose large tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

One of those allies, Japan, hit out immediately at the announcement, saying the moves "could have a grave impact on the economic relationship of Japan and the US", the world's 3rd and top economies respectively.

However, in an interview that aired on Sunday, Kudlow predicted that in addition to Canada, Mexico and Australia, other countries would also secure exemptions from the tariffs.
