Broadcaster and comedian Jim Bowen, best known for hosting darts-based game show Bullseye in the 1980s and '90s, has died at the age of 80.

The Lancashire-born star was best known for his role as the genial host of Bullseye, which aired for 14 years from 1981 until 1995 and was watched by over 12 million viewers.

"By accident, Bullseye's catchphrases took off including, "Look at what you could have won", "keep out of the black, and in the red; nothing in this game for two in a bed" and 'BFH - your bus fare home'".

He enjoyed cameo roles in dramas such as Last Of The Summer Wine as well as roles in Jonathan Creek and in Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights.

"He passed away very peacefully, [Phyllis] was with him".

His agent Patsy Martin told the Press Association: "I will very sadly miss Jim. It wasn't completely unexpected, he's been ill for several weeks in hospital", he said.

He passed away this morning with wife Phyllis by his side but it is not clear how Bowen, who had suffered several strokes over the years, died.
