A woman was sentenced Friday (March 9) to 21 years and four months in prison after she was accused of drugging children at an Oregon daycare so she could ditch the job to workout and go tanning, according to The Oregonian.

January Neatherlin, 32, was sentenced Friday after she pleaded guilty to 11 counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment and a count of third-degree assault, the Bend Bulletin reported.

Neatherlin was arrested previous year after police found seven children younger than 5 left unattended at her illegal daycare center called Little Giggles.

Authorities said she forced the children to take melatonin to induce sleep before heading out to work on her self-care.

Other parents said their children now have trouble sleeping as a result of Neatherlin feeding them melatonin.

The 32-year-old also told parents between 11am and 2pm that she could not pick up or drop off kids as this was "nap time".

The case of gross negligence came under investigation when January Neatherlin was reported by her former boyfriend and former roommate of leaving the children in her day care unattended.

One example given was an 11-month-old girl who was taken to hospital after suffering bleeding and swelling on her head; injuries which were consistent with being repeatedly struck or shaken.

"It is this court's hope that you are able to find it or reconstruct it, and make yourself whole at some point", he said. Neatherlin said she made a "very poor call" that has forever changed her life, "and may even end it". Prosecutors initially appealed for a 35-year sentence. She also conceded to overheating a bottle of milk resulting in giving a child burns.

Another parent said her child had blisters in her mouth and on her shoulders after attending Little Giggles.

Court documents said she had an "ongoing, systematic scheme of doing what she wanted and getting what she wanted, without any concern for the danger she was placing others in".

In 2014, she was found to be caring for more children than allowed without a license. "I failed you all".

The judge at her trial told Neatherlin, her actions led to behavioral issues, financial struggles and relationship problems in kids she was given the responsibility to look after.

Neatherlin had been running the illegal childcare operation for about four years, and she also lied to parents about being a registered nurse, but had no such qualifications, according to The Oregonian.
