On Tuesday, the Lima group of 14 Latin American countries plus Canada said the election would not be free and fair as long as Venezuela has political prisoners, the opposition was not fully participating and Venezuelans overseas were not allowed to vote.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Wednesday that the Country´s General Consulate in Miami will be opened to ensure Venezuelans who reside in the United States can register to vote in the April 22 presidential elections.

Maduro also said Argentina's president Mauricio Macri, with whom he has regularly sparred, should call a meeting of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) group of Latin American nations with him. "Because come rain or shine, by air, land, or sea, I will attend the Summit of the Americas", Maduro said during a press conference with foreign journalists.
