SpaceX's plan to beam broadband services to America and the world via its Starlink satellite constellation got a big thumbs-up today from Ajit Pai, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. The main passenger is a Spanish Earth observation satellite. A per the latest reports, SpaceX may launch its first satellite for global internet constellation on February 17. The rocket to be launched from same launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California also is to carry Spain's PAZ satellite.

The PAZ satellite sits in Spain a year ago prior to being shipped to Vandenberg Air Force Base for launch aboard a Falcon rocket.

Falcon Heavy lifts off from Kennedy Space Center.

Pai's endorsement isn't exactly a surprise: The FCC already has given its approval to rival companies with similar plans, including OneWeb, Space Norway and Telesat.

Spacex is expecting this year and 2019 to be a rather busy one.

The satellite internet side of its revenue picture could help it pay for ambitious projects like its proposed Mars missions, as SpaceX CEO Elon Musk explained previously when outlining the company's long-term plans. President Donald Trump's infrastructure proposal lists broadband, or high-speed internet service, as eligible for funding alongside traditional projects such as roads and bridges.

If these tests go well, SpaceX could begin launching the first of its satellites later this year, with a functional, if limited, network in place by 2020. It was said at the time that the company would launch at least one prototype before the end of 2017, followed by a second one "during the early months of 2018". Telesat and fellow Canadian company Kepler Communications both launched satellites in January - Kepler a cubesat on a Chinese Long March 11 and Telesat a larger 168-kilogram smallsat on an Indian Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle. SpaceX's application - along with those of other satellite companies seeking licenses or access to the US market for non-geostationary satellite orbit systems - involves one such innovation. "So we need things that will generate a lot of money".

Cubesat-operator Kepler is less of a competitor to SpaceX, OneWeb and Telesat given its focus on connecting low-data Internet-of-Things devices.

In addition to the satellite, the team transported the electrical and mechanical ground support equipment plus all the testing and conditioning devices needed to prepare the satellite for the final leg of its journey to space.
