'No current prospect' of a deal at Stormont

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said he "very much regrets" the statment from the DUP collapsing the talks process and calling for direct rule. "There was talk about a free-standing Irish Language Act...but we won't be agreeing to an Irish Language Act...we've always said that was a step too far".

"I have made it consistently clear that unionists will not countenance a standalone or free standing Irish language act".

Sinn Fein negotiator, Conor Murphy MLA, responded: "The talks are at a critical stage and Sinn Fein's focus remains on achieving a deal to restore the political institutions".

Mrs Foster said the disagreements were over a "stand alone" Irish Language Act which she could not sell to her party's rank and file or grassroots membership.

O'Neill said Sinn Fein had reached an accommodation with the leadership of the DUP, adding they had failed to close a deal.

In an interview with the Press Association, Mrs Foster rubbished speculation about the shape of Irish language laws that might emerge from the powersharing negotiations.

"Whether it is this week, whether it is in a couple of weeks or whether it's in a couple of months what I must ensure is that we have an accommodation that everybody feels content with".

The leader of Alliance Party, Naomi Long, said: "We are in a very precarious situation at this point in time, we are essentially in unchartered territory". I respect the Irish language and those who speak it but in a shared society this can not be a one-way street.

Foyle MP Elisha McCallion tonight squarely pointed the finger at the DUP for the failure to strike a deal aimed at restoring the Stormont Assembly.

"Some of the speculation has actually caused a lot of concern right across the community in Northern Ireland and it's important that we say that that is not based in reality". Last Tuesday, Foster addressed two inflammatory issues when she insisted people would not be forced to learn Irish and it would not be made compulsory in schools.

"Northern Ireland is best governed by local ministers who are accountable to local people".

"In our view, there is no current prospect of these discussions leading to an Executive being formed".

"Karen Bradley will now have to explain how she hopes to get the DUP back to the table, and if that proves impossible, how she is going to take forward issues such as equal marriage, as well as dealing with tough decisions on health, education and infrastructure that have been left unresolved for over 400 days".

The DUP did not meet Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on Monday but Mrs Foster rejected the suggestion that recent frayed relations between the two over Brexit was the reason.

Talks to restart Northern Ireland's power-sharing government have broken down yet again, although Britain held out hope that a solution could still be reached.
